I’ve been a gamer all my life. I’m about the right age to have been there through the entire rise of videogaming. I’ve been into it since we got our Atari 2600 (new) when I was a kid. Now my kids have access to an Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and a Wii in our livingroom (”Dad, what’s an arcade?”). Times sure have changed for gamers. But one thing that hasn’t changed very much is the way non-gamers think about gamers… especially when you’re an adult gamer. I know people that think videogames are dumb toys and you’re childish for liking them. To people like that they’re a big waste of time. Yet if you play Madden around them, they’re likely to sit down and watch, because, you know, it’s “football”. I know other people that think gaming is a waste of money as well as time. Yet they play the lottery, eat out all the time, and similarly, will sit down and even play a video poker machine. The entire time not realizing that they’re playing a friggin’ videogame. It’s one you play for real money, but a videogame nonetheless. [rant continue after the jump]
