When it comes to validating new pricing schemes or delivery methods, people constantly chant the mantra “Vote with your wallet!” which I do, every time I purchase or don’t purchase something. Today’s news that Activision has sold over 650,000 downloads of their Guitar Hero II song packs on Xbox Live Marketplace just took a crap the size of Delaware on my vote to abstain. It’s almost like voting in the Presidential election when you live on the West Coast… the decision is made before I even get a chance to be heard.
Let’s do some “crazy math” here: 650,000 x 500 MS points (or $6.25 to those of us that prefer real-world units) is over FOUR MILLION DOLLARS. That’s four million dollars that didn’t require shipping, didn’t require packaging, didn’t require shelf space, etc. All this has done is prove to Activision that people WILL buy their songs in arbitrary bundles at over $2/song. The 650,000 purchases are tangible. The potential number of people that intentionally weighed whether or not to buy the song packs and opted not to don’t even matter. So where does that leave us hold-outs that live by “Vote with your wallet” day in and day out? Read the rest of this rant by clicking below…
