Rothbart’s Rant #19 - "Achievement Unlocked" Edition

Microsoft really brought something new and unique when it brought Achievements to gaming. Achievements and Gamerscore were both presented to us as a friendly way to compare ourselves to our gaming friends. I can’t help but wonder if they’ve done a LOT more than that though. Today’s rant is about Achievements and some things about them that bug me. I want to make a few things clear up front though. I could take or leave both Achievements and Gamerscores, they’re not important to me. That said, I take issue with the implementation of them more than the idea of them.

At the very center of Achievements as we’ve been told, is a permanent “bookmark” if you will, that can serve as a reminder that we’ve “achieved” some particular gaming goal or status. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about that and honestly, with the way my memory is… I could use this in my everyday life too! I’d love a little pat on the back every morning that I get up on time, every morning that I get to work on time, etc… but there are always ways to make a good thing “not so good” and I honestly think both Achievements and Gamerscore have changed the way some people play games.
